Under Scrutiny (Ritual Assignment) Stool, Magnifying glass, Marker, Tin Honors Studio Art, November 2024 This piece visualizes the constant scrutiny I feel subjected to. No matter how I spend my time, it feels like someone is always watching me. It is the adults, role models, and peers who evaluate and wait for my mistakes. In this liminal space between childhood and adulthood, expectations feel burdensome, like living under a magnifying glass. As I sit on my stool, attempting to relax, my gaze wanders until I meet the eyes of a stranger. This expresses the mutual discomfort of observation. When one of us breaks eye contact, I step out of my space to grab my marker. Before getting started, I step closer to their face, observing the contours of their eyes and irises. I draw a set of glaring eyes on the wall behind me. These pupils follow, judging, as I return to my seat. With my back turned, I continue my routine with oblivion.
