"Hurry, chase the next..."

Hurry, Chase the Next… (Language) Camera, adobe fresco, lightroom Honors Studio Art, November 2024   I explore the tension between urgency and aspiration, creating a layered visual piece that compels viewers to confront the relentless pursuit of "more." We live in a fast-paced world, always being told to “Hurry, and chase the next thing.” Because of this, panic always exists in our everyday lives, and it becomes difficult to just exist in the moment. It feels impossible to just be when you’re constantly planning, contemplating, and worrying over the future.  In making this piece, I invited my peers to share their biggest aspirations, stressors, or desires that fuel their daily lives. I then captured a black-and-white photo of them in motion. They confided their reflections: I’m chasing: “Sleep” “Food”  “The next time I get to go home” “Deeper friendships” “My next race” “perfection” So what are you chasing after? Lost Childhood Object: Susie Homemaker's oven

Image
Planning sketch  The oven is made out of a cardboard base that's painted aqua. I created a lightbulb using fairy lights, film, and tin foil. I used hot glue to give the colored film its spherical structure.  My final piece is an artistic representation of Ms. Watkins Susie Homemaker's oven. I wanted to include her notable descriptions of the oven's aqua color, light bulb, painted stove top, colorful dials, and mini cake box. The oven door opens and closes shut because the real one locks for four hours while cooking by a lightbulb!

This is a revised version of fish food. I added blue gel to mimic the reflection of water where the coi fish now dangled on top of. It is hung by woven orange and red embroidery thread which is sewn through the human’s lip. It is a message on how violence often overwhelms the peaceful emotions and how these two feelings are linked together. A major sacrifice is written out with individual letters from a magazine, The letters collage as the human’s teeth to better highlight the sacrificial relationship between these two juxtaposing images. Oftentimes it feels like you need to sacrifice one extreme for another.   This is a multi-media piece made from collages of magazines, oil pastels, and bead embroidery.  I was inspired by my trip to the dentist to draw an open mouth. I wanted to scale this large, so it could take up the entire left corner. On the right side, I used magazines to collage blue water and a koi fish, stealing from the small pond I saw on my walk. There is a sense ...
