Fish food
This is a revised version of fish food. I added blue gel to mimic the reflection of water where the coi fish now dangled on top of. It is hung by woven orange and red embroidery thread which is sewn through the human’s lip. It is a message on how violence often overwhelms the peaceful emotions and how these two feelings are linked together. A major sacrifice is written out with individual letters from a magazine, The letters collage as the human’s teeth to better highlight the sacrificial relationship between these two juxtaposing images. Oftentimes it feels like you need to sacrifice one extreme for another.
This is a multi-media piece made from collages of magazines, oil pastels, and bead embroidery.
I was inspired by my trip to the dentist to draw an open mouth. I wanted to scale this large, so it could take up the entire left corner. On the right side, I used magazines to collage blue water and a koi fish, stealing from the small pond I saw on my walk. There is a sense of violence between the mouth and the swimming fish, so I balanced this chaos with detached cloth, embroidered with beads in the shape of an isolated koi fish. I connected this separation with green beads. Bead embroidery was a concept I "stole" from my conversation with my friend over the summer as she was explaining her new hobby. Finally, "a major sacrifice" is written in the right corner, taken from the song "End of Beginning" by Djo. This song speaks about transitions in life, and "a major sacrifice" refers to a risk worth taking. Is the swim swimming on its own path or straight into the mouth of a predator?
