Reimagined Utopia (Thesis 4)

Reimagined Utopia

Tulle, Chains, Polyester stuffing, Colored film, Wooden Frame, Fabric, Nails,

Previously, this was a 3-d installation piece with flowing tulle and light catchers. It visualized a childhood memory, a time when everything felt free, energetic, and pure. When I think of my thesis idea of finding autonomy, I realize that the last time I truly felt autonomous was when I was a little kid—a time with no expectations or responsibilities. I could do anything I wanted. I now reimagine Utopia in 2-d, entrapped in this window frame.

The frame is suspended by chains linked to previous pieces: The Entropy Mask and The Body as a vessel. Both these pieces represent present-day conflicts with identity and self-perception.

I utilize the frame I built with all the tulle connected and contain it using a sheet of fabric. When I put this against the light, I realize that the colors and shadows on the flip side create a cool effect. The steps I will need to tackle are: the free edge of the fabric, suspending the tulle, clouds, and colored film onto the fabric, and manipulating the flip side of white fabric.

I sew the components onto the fabric.
I hammer nails onto the frame to replace the staples. These nails juxtapose the other soft materials and contain everything in a two-dimensional space. Now, I am only free from judgment, expectations, and my own mind in a fictional space. A utopia with true autonomy only exists in a frame, suspended from reality.

Once I install the piece, suspended against a window, the light will reveal color, thread, and shadow.
